The History of Magelake

1662 - 'Madgelake Meadow' referred to in the will of Uffculme yeoman, James Burrow.

Maybe a drained meadow formed from what was a watery area haunted by midges.


1718 - Houses and Estate at 'Madgelake' bequeathed to Susan Holway.


1961 - Meadow of 8 acres bequeathed from the estate of Thomas (Snippy) Brice and Elizabeth Brice to Uffculme Parish Council as a recreation ground.


1968 - Volunteer Management Committee formed for Magelake Recreation Ground.


1972/77 - Battle for resources to finance an amenity building at Magelake (at same time Uffculme Trust were seeking funds to develop New room into what is now The Village Hall).


1977 25th June - Uffculme Parish Hall is opened at MAgelake by Chief Executive of Devon County Council, Mr C.V. Lucas. Comprised multi-purpose room, a kitchen and two sports changing rooms. Home of Culm Valley Football Club, founded in 1972.


1993/94 - Extension room with bar built by volunteers.


1999 - Improvements to windows, curtains, new chairs and tennis equipment.


2003/05 - Evolution of the Multi-purpose games facility to provide for all weather use built by Midas, opened by Angela Browning MP.


2005 - Drainage of main grassed area by projects Ltd.


2006 - Installation of floodlights by Bramwood


2007 - Damage to MUGA by flooding.


2008 - Repairs to MUGA by Sports Maintanence.


2009/11 - Invitation from Viridor Credits for Uffculme to propose a 10th Anniversary showcase Project. An integrated Multi-use indoor sporting and leisure facilitieswas evolved. Architectural design by Reed Holland, including changing rooms, central function room and covered frontage incorporating original hall.


2011/12 - Construction by Kingston.


2012 - New kitchen facilities by P Morris. 


2012 - Approach to new Pavilion including parking areas.


2012 31st August - Opening by Mr Francis Welland.
